College money for single parents

Going back to school as a parent is hard, and you do not have to pay for it alone. The biggest source of free college money is the federal Pell Grant, and the only way to get it is the FAFSA.

Tip

  • If your income dropped or you have high child care costs, ask your school's financial aid office for a "professional judgment" review. It can raise your aid.
  • Ask your college whether it has a CCAMPIS grant. It is federal money some schools use for low-cost child care for student parents.
